To the editor: The article by Devereux and associates (1) suggests that variable penetrance explains the sexual predisposition for mitral valve prolapse in women. The authors also confirmed previous observations that mitral valve prolapse affects primarily younger women. These sex and age characteristics raise a provocative question about the origins of mitral valve prolapse.
The relatively high prevalence of mitral valve prolapse in young women has been well documented (2, 3). Cerebrovascular, embolic, and cardiovascular complications of mitral valve prolapse along with associated metabolic and connective tissue diseases have been described (2, 3).
