Major advances in the medical care of surgical patients have been made in the 12 years since the second edition of this book. The authors have again attempted to present an overview of a huge area of medical knowledge for the "busy clinical surgeon and surgical resident." An overview is provided, but it is frightening to think that a physician would provide pre- and postoperative care from this knowledge base.
The aphorisms and adjurations at the start give a wonderfully light tone. The nutrition chapters supply useful information with tables summarizing enteral diets and their possible complications. The section on
