The preparation of a textbook of moderate size to aid the intelligent practice of the nonspecialist is a peculiarly difficult task because it requires innumerable decisions as to what information really is important. No two specialists will fully agree about these decisions. However, Dr. Rothschild's work, which is about one fourth as long as a comprehensive rheumatology text and one third the cost, has come close to achieving this unattainable goal.
