To the editor: Shinn and Logue describe in their editorial (1) a group of misleading reports of cancer therapy in which the improper selection of control groups invalidated each study. The editorial concluded that the internist should critically evaluate "studies . . . in the increasingly voluminous and confusing literature."
Unmentioned was the editorial failure of the prestigious journais (including the Annals) that printed such studies. I have read much of the importance of experimental controls, but the very journals (and not just the Annals) that on one page criticize improper experimental design will on another page publish just such
