To the editor: In a letter published in 1974, Dr. Prolla reported finding Curschmann spirals in cervical smears of six patients and suggested a relation to a systemic effect of cigarette smoking. We have found spirals in 8 of 9474 consecutive cervical smears. The youngest of the 8 patients was 20 years old and the oldest, 34. Two of the patients were moderate smokers, but 6 had never smoked. All 8 had a history of allergy to foods or drugs or a contact type of dermatitis. None had ever had bronchial asthma.
These findings confirm Dr. Prolla's statement that Curschmann
