To the editor: In view of the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee (GMENAC) report that this country will have a surplus of primary care physicians, Cawley and associates (1) present a timely discussion on the alternative employment possibilities for physician's assistants. As the authors state, geriatrics will be one of the areas for use of physician's assistants in the future. Unfortunately, in describing the role of physician's assistants in geriatrics the authors fail to clarify several issues concerning their use as care providers for geriatric patients.
The first issue is that of cost. It is not that physician's assistants
