Recently, Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia, speaking on major national political issues to a small group of supporters in Atlanta, commented that within the next few years there must be drastic changes in Medicare regulations due to runaway health care expenditures. He noted specifically the enormous cost to the Medicare program for caring for terminally ill patients. He told the lawyers, bankers, and businessmen assembled that U.S. citizens must think seriously about the ethics of the situations into which medical technology, especially life-support devices and systems, has led us.
