Many, if not most, books that derive from conferences give the impression of being disjointed and themeless. This book, reporting a Rockefeller Archive Center Conference, is no exception. It is a series of statements by distinguished persons on subjects of interest in academic medicine, with fragments of discussion appended occasionally. The book is not a thoughtful, coherent, and comprehensive review or projection of the problems, opportunities, and trends of academic medicine.
Inevitably, the quality and interest of the chapters, each representing a presentation by a different speaker, vary. Some chapters are excellent, succinct summaries that are a pleasure to read;
