A brief lecture by the author, with slides and a graph, reviews the indications for providing nutritional support, techniques of assessing nutritional status, and requirements for nutrient provision with primary emphasis on nitrogen and calories. Methods for providing such nutrition are not reviewed. The program is elementary and directed at medical students, housestaff, and dietitians for introductory self-instruction before exposure to a more clinical orientation. Because of the major use of tables, the rapid coverage, and the complexity of the subject, supplementary material and discussion are essential to make this presentation useful to the student.
