Direct visual observation of the lesion is a larger part of the physical examination in dermatology than in any other medical specialty. Atlases of color photographs are therefore particularly useful for students learning to recognize the gross morphologic aspects of cutaneous lesions. Of the many small atlases currently in print, Dr. Rassner's stands out for the quality of the photographic reproductions. All of the black-and-white photographs in the first edition, except one, have been replaced with color photographs, and several additional illustrations have been incorporated. The remaining black-and-white illustration, that of lamellar ichthyosis, could have been deleted without affecting the
