A presentation of the clinical manifestations of respiratory disease and a simple explanation of their physiologic basis and significance is a worthwhile contribution. Until publication of this small book, there were no such compilations directed at junior medical students, respiratory therapists, and nurses with a special interest in respiratory medicine. In many respects this multiauthored text, largely from the Medical College of Virginia, fulfils its intent as "a practical guide" for that particular group. However, its major advantages (brevity and simplicity) are the basis of some of its disadvantages.
The book has three major parts: symptoms, signs, and specific diseases.
