Over the past 2 to 3 decades, textbooks of geriatric medicine have followed the traditional format of presenting information by organ system and disease orientation. Although these works have usually opened with chapters reviewing up-to-date knowledge about the biology of human aging and the dramatic demographic changes within western society, they have failed to focus on the fundamental issues of comprehensive assessment of the elderly.
