To the editor: The editorial by Shimm and Gerweck (1) discussed hyperthermia in the treatment of cancer. Hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy is a promising therapeutic approach to malignancy (2). How hyperthermia leads to tumor destruction is, however, still not fully understood (3).
Our recent findings may help to clarify some of hyperthermia's actions. We have studied the hemorheologic effects of whole body hyperthermia in 12 healthy young volunteers (water, 42 °C, 20 minutes). The results showed a significant increase in ex-vivo blood fluidity as measured by blood and plasma viscosity (both temperature controlled) and hematocrit (10%, 7%, and 5% respectively).
