Monitoring of therapeutic drug levels in blood has become a useful tool in medical practice. Our enhanced knowledge of the clinical application of pharmacokinetics and the proper interpretation of drug levels has contributed to the rational and intelligent use of drugs in the treatment of patients. Furthermore, progress in analytical methods has provided precise measurements of drug levels in body fluids or tissues. These advances have also increased the awareness of physicians of the need for and desirability of accurate drug-level determination to monitor drug efficacy, side effects, and interactions during multidrug therapies.
