Courses on medical history have not thrived in our medical schools, and no wonder: Pressures on the curriculum to accommodate still-expanding medical science and the apparent irrelevance of medical history to today's practice give medical history little chance for a place in most schools. The apparent irrelevance is easy to understand; the student is likely to see the medical past as quaint, bizarre, ignorant, or even stupid. Dr. King believes, correctly, that the value of medical history lies not in showing us what was done and who did it but in showing how our predecessors thought about the clinical problems
