The first edition of this book was a small volume published in 1908 that described techniques for performing the few laboratory tests available at that time. Subsequent editions have established it as the standard textbook for the clinical laboratory. In examining the last five editions, a definite trend in the evolution of the book becomes apparent. As expected, the new information presents advances in diagnostic laboratory techniques, but the space devoted to instructions for doing tests has progressively diminished.
