Nyhan is a giant in his field and has written a book that every pediatrician should own. Internists with an interest or practice in "metabolism" should also give it serious consideration. Progress in this area has been remarkable over the past 20 years largely due to the technologic advances of ion-exchange chromatography of amino acids; gas chromatography of organic acids, which are intimately related; and, more recently, tissue culture and gene analysis and manipulations. Despite his research stature, the author concentrates on diagnostic and treatment opportunities and spares the reader complex biochemical considerations, keeping the text readily understandable.
