Dr. Das Gupta has organized this text because of a "growing awareness that both pre- and post-doctoral trainees in cardiology would benefit from a reference book that addresses the clinical complexities of critically ill patients in critical care units." With the aid of 27 colleagues, predominantly from the University of Chicago, he has arranged the 21 chapters into three sections: acute hemodynamic disorders, electrophysiology and rhythm disorders, and noninvasive investigative and monitoring techniques.
The book seems to be a loosely organized continuing medical education course in which each member of the faculty has addressed a favorite topic or topics in
