This excellent videotape shows a middle-aged woman with irritable bowel syndrome and recent exacerbation of her symptoms due to the death of her husband and unresolved grief. The tape shows the difficulties of dealing with uncertainty in the diagnosis, in addition to focusing on critical aspects of the physician-patient relationship.
The tape dramatizes problems of time and urgency in the ambulatory setting. The resident's initial frustration and inadequate relationship with the patient evolve into problems of emotional overinvolvement and loss of objectivity.
