In the evolution of the use of ultrasound for examination of the cardiovascular system, M-mode echocardiography was followed by two-dimensional echocardiography, which was followed by the introduction of pulsed and continuous-wave Doppler techniques to record blood flow velocity. Now comes real-time two-dimensional echocardiography which uses color coding to image blood flow in the heart and larger arteries and veins. The authors of this book are the engineers who developed this new system, and the clinicians who performed the initial clinical studies.
