This year for the first time Health, United States, 1983 provides detailed information for states on selected health measures. . . . Among the state comparisons . . . are infant mortality rates, which for white infants ranged from 9.0 in Vermont to 12.5 in West Virginia in 1979-1981. For the 27 states with black populations of 150,000 or more, the mortality rate for black infants ranged from 16.4 in Massachusetts to 25.9 in Illinois during the same period.
