To the editor: We read with interest the recent article (1) on thrombocytopenic purpura in chronic narcotics addicts. In addition to the three reports cited by the authors, other investigators previously reported on immune thrombocytopenia in drug addicts (2-4). Some points merit further comment.
In narcotics addicts, a prompt and persistent recovery of thrombocytopenia can be achieved after a few days of steroid treatment (2, 5, 6) or even without any treatment (4, 5, 6); in several cases relapses have been seen (3-6). The cause of thrombocytopenia in narcotics addicts seems to be heterogenous.
We recently treated a heroin addict
