To the editor: We wish to comment on the interesting article by Dr. Ognibene and associates (1) on pulmonary impairment induced by Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
First, in our experience with 78 bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples from 60 patients with AIDS with pneumonia or pleuropneumonia, we found intra-alveolar hemorrhages with positive macrophage Perls' staining in 6 patients; diagnosis of bronchopulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma was documented pathologically by bronchial biopsy in 3, open lung biopsy in 2, and autopsy in 1. There were no false-positive results. Conversely, 1 patient with a suggestive endoscopic appearance had a
