Not since the publication in 1973 of the section on renal physiology in the Handbook of Physiology has a comparable text appeared. But the current book is much more than that section, not only in cost and size, but also in focus and content. The Handbook dealt mostly with physiology whereas this book deals with "processes by which the kidney maintains the volume and composition of the body in the face of physiologic demands and pathologic disturbances." The editors excluded "an analysis of specific renal diseases, immunonephrology, and such modalities of therapy as transplantation and dialysis." There is overlap with
