To the editor: In the study by Kearney and colleagues (1) concerning theophylline toxicity and the beta-adrenergic system, certain points of the experimental protocol are not immediately clear to us. The authors appear to have studied only one animal in each protocol. If that is the case we have serious reservations about the validity of this study. Tremendous variations can occur from one dog to the next that one-dog group studies cannot take into consideration. For example, these variations may account for the fact that the basal heart rate was 210/minute in Protocol 1 and 126/minute in Protocol 2 and
