To the editor: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy occurs with an unusually low incidence in blacks (1). There has been no apparent explanation for this so far. Immunoglobulin A1 is the predominant subtype in human serum, and most evidence shows that IgA1 is the immunoglobulin involved in the glomerulus and in immune complexes in IgA nephropathy. However, IgA2 is thought to be important in the first-line defense against the offending antigen at the mucosal surface (2).
