The first steps in solving any problem are identifying its existence and defining its extent. Thus, a volume that describes the historical and social sources of stress for women physicians is extraordinarily important. But authors Bowman and Allen go beyond the mere citations of studies of mental illness in women physicians (with appropriate caveats about interpreting data collected by biased investigators) to identifying actual stresses experienced by all women physicians.
