To the editor: The article on carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) by Fletcher (1) was heavily weighted toward the negative aspects of this test. Because this paper was commissioned by the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medical Necessity Project, one has to wonder if studies such as these are going to be guidelines for reimbursement in the future, as mentioned in the accompanying editorial (2). Thus, I feel compelled to bring up the primary shortcoming of this article: its lack of enthusiasm for the positive aspect of this test.
