The emergency care of the acutely ill patient is most often provided by physicians with differing degrees of training, expertise, and experience. In training institutions, this care is most often the responsibility of the housestaff, that is, the intern, resident, or fellow during his rotation in the emergency department as senior medical resident or fellow on call.
