Managing the patient who requires nutritional support is a complicated task requiring knowledge of nutriture; fluid, electrolyte, and metabolic acid-base balances; glucohomeostasis; and feeding systems. The successful implementation of enteral and parenteral hyperalimentation will depend on a metabolic support team including a physician, nurse, pharmacist, dietitian, and physical therapist.
