To the editor: I read with interest the letter of Dr. Goldstein (1) on the effect of cimetidine on Epstein-Barr virus infection. For the past 7 years, since I have been taking H2-blockers (cimetidine at first and ranitidine in the last 2 years) on and off for the treatment of duodenal peptic ulcer, I have noticed that the use of either of these substances has had a marked effect in preventing the common cold, that is, upper respiratory tract viral infections.
