Forty-five years ago the first beta-lactam antibiotic, penicillin, was introduced into clinical medicine. Since that time, additional beta-lactam compounds have been produced. There are currently more than 40 different beta-lactam antibiotics licensed and in use throughout the world. The 36 contributors to this book, who represent widely divergent fields, attempt to produce a full view of these compounds.
