To the editor: Schroeder and associates (1) report two cases of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus treated with plasmapheresis and pulse cyclophosphamide. The authors state that such a therapeutic combination has not yet been applied to patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. We would like to point out our larger experience with a similar protocol that also provides some encouraging data (2).
We have treated 26 patients with persistently active systemic lupus erythematosus over a 6-month period in spite of treatment with prednisone greater than or equal to 0.5 mg/kg body weight ·d or prednisone in any dose in combination with
