TO THE EDITOR: Von Schacky's (1) article on the potential for omega-3 fatty acids in altering the course of atherosclerosis is an excellent overview of a complex area. Particularly important is his emphasis on the lack of and need for controlled clinical trials of fish oil. The lack of well-designed clinical studies is especially notable in evaluating the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on blood pressure (2). Although several studies in small numbers of Western volunteers have found various fish oil preparations to have hypotensive properties, the idea that hypertension is rare among Eskimos appears to have arisen from anecdotal
