To the editor: In his article on arterial blood gas analysis (1), Dr. Raffin states that "special preheparinized plastic syringes have been developed, but their efficacy has not yet been established."
In our intensive care unit, we measured pH, arterial PO2, and arterial PCO2 in 20 consecutive patients. We obtained each sample in duplicate by radial artery puncture, one with a preheparinized syringe (Terumo Preza-Pack II; Terumo Corp., Tokyo, Japan) and the other with the regular disposable syringes used in our hospital. The results were compared among themselves and against the results obtained by analyzing arterial blood obtained through a
