The assay methods necessary to measure minute amounts of drugs and their metabolites in biological fluids are becoming widely available for use in the clinical setting. The ability to measure drug concentrations does not, however, necessarily equate with the ability to use such results to improve clinical decisions regarding drug therapy. The useful clinical application of serum drug concentration measurements is currently restricted to a surprisingly small number of drugs and requires a thorough understanding of the pharmacokinetic properties of these drugs. This book presents a comprehensive review of the promise and limitations of therapeutic drug monitoring.
