Because urinary tract infections are common, and urine is readily available for study, there is a sustained and productive research enterprise that yields nearly 1000 articles per year. Despite this activity, there remains substantial uncertainty about even simple questions related to risk factors, sequelae, diagnosis, and treatment of urinary tract infections.
Professor Kunin's current book has its roots in his brief guide to diagnosis and treatment published in 1972. The material has grown substantially and includes detailed, thoughtful, and current discussions of epidemiology, pathophysiology, microbial virulence factors, diagnostic methods, nosocomial infections, host defense mechanisms, and therapy.
