Various strategies have been proposed to keep up with the rapid increase in medical knowledge. Scientific American publishes monthly supplements, BRS Colleague facilitates computer access to medical journals, and editors revise their textbooks at ever-shortening intervals. This edition follows the initial one by only 4 years. The editors have obviously been busy because more than 60 contributors have been added, 34 new chapters written, and many others extensively revised.
