This new volume is a smaller version of the preventive medicine texts familiar to those of us who attended medical school in the 1950s and 1960s (Leavell and Clark; Clark and MacMahon). However it does not attempt, as those books did, to cover the workings of public health agencies or the delivery of medical care. That may be just as well, as the public sector role in health and the subjects of medical care organization are now so diverse and complex they require texts of their own.
