To the Editor: We read with interest Dr. von Schacky's (1) excellent perspective on marine omega-3 fatty acids. In general, we agree with his review but believe that one statement needs proper clarification. In discussing the difficulty with the choice of placebo controls in fish oil studies, Dr. von Schacky stated that olive oil can lower blood lipids, implying that olive oil may not be a suitable placebo. Unfortunately, the statement is a misleading generalization out of its original context, in which olive oil was used in very large dosages. This statement best applies to studies on large doses of
