Despite questions raised by health care providers about the utility and cost effectiveness of intensive care units, the discipline of critical care medicine has recently become a separate subspecialty of internal medicine. New textbooks and journals covering various aspects of the field have appeared in response to this interest in critical care medicine. Though this book focuses primarily on acute respiratory failure, it also covers the interfaces between respiratory failure and various other disciplines, such as cardiology, infectious disease, and nephrology.
The contributors range from senior clinician investigators to fellows, physical therapists, and nurses. Many are from the institutions with
