To the Editor: We read with interest the reports of the Conference of the National Institutes of Health on hepatocellular carcinoma. In the section "Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma," Dr. Lotze refers to the publication by Friedman and coworkers (reference 96) and then states, "The only other controlled, randomized study (97) of treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma was reported from Hong Kong." This statement is not correct. The first significant publication on controlled, randomized studies in hepatocellular carcinoma, "Malignant Hepatoma: Controlled Therapeutic Trials," was published in the March 1967 South African Medical Journal: Dr. Lotze also overlooked five later controlled, randomized
