An impressive set of thoughtful, far-ranging, and extended essays on conceptual and experiential bases for the intellectual and social operations of clinical medicine. Particular attention to the psyche-soma "problem," clinical expertise, students' and residents' attitudes, discourse with patients, the central events of life such as the menopause and dying, truth telling, and transcultural differences. These are perspectives rarely considered in most undergraduate and residency curricula. (EJH)
