This book is a scholarly contribution to the literature not only of nutrition but also of medicine and science in its broadest aspect. It describes the Odyssey of discovery as ideas slowly appeared from accumulated observations, attempts at systemization of that knowledge, and the somewhat smoother journey to discovery in the early 1900s.
The first two chapters are fascinating. They provide a frighteningly realistic picture of the courage that was needed during voyages of discovery and the despair that was endured. The reader confronts almost immediately the scholarship and enormous effort that the author has brought to this work.
