Autobiographical essays by a longtime leading British surgeon. They are informal, plain-speaking, rich in anecdote, engaging. Perhaps their greatest value is their long perspective on the recent decades in medicine with its many radical changes and ongoing verities. Good writing, good reading. (EJH)
