Who reads histories of medical schools? Only their alumni and alumnae? Insomniacs in the profession? Historians? Probably not medical students, who already have to sweat enough in trying to extract from encyclopedic textbooks the central principles of clinical procedure and interpretation; they rarely have time to seek historical perspectives even on the nature and concepts of disease, let alone on the evolution of the schools they happen to be in.
Why the audiences for histories of medical schools are usually small can be seen in some aspects of these histories of three of our major and older schools. All three
