To the Editor: The role of tumor necrosis factor (cachectin) in the pathogenesis of cachexia from cancer and other chronic diseases remains to be fully explored. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibits lipoprotein lipase in vitro and causes depletion of fat stores and muscle wasting in animal models (1). We suggest that TNF may also be responsible for alterations in resting metabolic rate.
