To the Editor: Wolinsky and colleagues (1) conclude that the median time from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection to seroconversion is 18 months, basing their calculation on their assertion that 20 of 24 men were positive for HIV-1-associated DNA 6 or more months before seroconversion. This report is the second from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) to suggest prolonged latency (2); however, two independent cohort studies could not replicate the first findings (3, 4).
We estimate that 100 seroconverters observed in the MACS (5) may have been eligible for Wolinsky and colleagues' study. Because selection criteria are
