Skiing alone on a bright quiet hill
I once crossed a rabbit's tracks
And followed them
Down on a powdered meadow.
Confident and direct they sped,
Straight 'til the wild final flurry
Of criss-cross and cut-back
Then they ended
Out on the open snow.
I pictured the hawk who had taken him—
Her unerring, converging descent.
I followed a miner down
In medicine clinic
Phlegmatic, he'd stuck by his
But last March mentioned coughing
He entered then the silent Land
Of Scan and Protocol
Of Chemo and Crude Survival.
No hawk for him now
