To the Editors: Montaner and colleagues (1) are to be commended for their study of corticosteroids and Pneumocystis pneumonia. Masur and Kovacs (2), likewise, should be commended for their carefully worded attempt to put this study Into perspective. The tentative recommendations that they put forth in their editorial require additional caveats both for patient care and for our current understanding of the role of steroids in treating this infection. We must ask whether steroid therapy is now considered appropriate for most patients who are even suspected of having this infection.
Ongoing trials will apparently show increased survival with "early" institution
